Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery, also known as Hemis Gompa, is one of the most famous and significant monasteries in the Ladakh region of northern India. Hemis Monastery is located in the Hemis village in the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Leh, the capital of Ladakh. Hemis Monastery was founded in the 17th century by Lama Stagtsang Raspa under the patronage of King Sengge Namgyal of Ladakh. It belongs to the Drukpa Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, which was founded by the revered scholar and saint Naropa. The monastery features a distinctive architectural style with its white walls, flat rooftops, and a central courtyard.
